The attendees of Kate and William’s lavish wedding received a lot of attention for the hats they selected. So did the ladies who attended the Kentucky Derby one week later. Why do ladies wear hats to the Kentucky Derby? No one knows for sure. We do know that it has been a tradition from the start. When the Kentucky Derby was first held, 137 years ago, hats were an essential everyday accessory for those who could afford them. Whether it is a status symbol or simply for sun shielding, we enjoy seeing the hats chosen by the celebrities. Below are some photos from this year’s event.
The Fairytail Wedding
A middle class young lady, from a small village in England, is now the Duchess of Cambridge. A week ago, the former Kate Middleton, married Prince William in a ceremony seen around the world. Will and Kate are the epitome of modern loyalty.
Dress: Kate entered the Westminster Abbey in a breathtaking gown by Alexander McQueen with elegant lace sleeves and 8 feet long train. The bride’s dress had a hint of blue ribbon sewn into it as her “something blue”.
Veil: The fingertip-length veil was made of ivory silk tulle and had embroidered trim.
Tiara: The ‘halo’ tiara was Kate’s “something borrowed”, loaned by the Queen.
Earings: Kate’s “something new” were a pair of diamond earrings that complemented the tiara.
Makeup: Kate did her own makeup after taking several lessons from makeup artist Arabella Preston. She went for the natural bridal makeup and looked very much like herself with a soft smokey eye look, slightly blushed cheeks and nude lips.
Hair: Her hair was a half-updo with cascading curls created by stylist Richard Ward.
Nail polish: Marina Sandoval created a custom-blend nail polish for the Duchess. It was a mix of Bourjois’ no. 28 Rose Lounge and Essie’s 423 Allure for a classic pale pink bridal manicure.
Perfume: Kate wore White Gardenia Petals by Illuminum. A fragrance also worn by Michelle Obama. It’s a combination of Lily, White Gardenia, Muguet, Jasmine and Amber Wood.
Kate has stayed true to her demure and practical style over the years. She has become a true royal style icon.
Feather & Tinsel Hair Extensions
The rumor has it that Steven Tyler started this trend when he was seen with feathers in his hair in American Idol. The trend was shortly seen all over Hollywood. It’s a really cute and stylish bohemian look for spring and summer. As if the feathers weren’t enough, stars have been seen wearing metallic highlights. Tinsel glitter makes for a great party look. Hair can be washed, styled, curled or flat-ironed. These feather and tinsel hair extensions are fun and easy to install with the right tools. If you want to save a trip to the salon, you can buy a kit that includes the feathers and tools (pliers, hook & silicone beads) from websites such as the ones below or you can buy clip in feather extensions from Etsy.

We are seeing some hot new nail trends this spring. At the New York Fashion week, nail art was a big hit. Celebs like Katy Perry and Justin Bieber have partnered up with OPI to create their own lines. Also, last week OPI launched its Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Collection which include six new cremes and Silver Shatter. Perhaps the creation of the Silver Shatter was inspired by the buzz created by Perry’s Black Shatter. The metallics and dark glossy finishes are not the only popular trends. We are seeing manicures in neutral and bright colors including baby blue and peachy pinks. Another popular trend is ombre nails. Take shades that are extremely close in color and voilà! Check out the spring collections of Essie, Dior, Estée Lauder and Chanel for more awesome shades.
Wear Bright Colors
Spring fashion is all about beautiful blocks of bright colors. The runway and the red carpet have gotten a taste of the rainbow this season and now it’s your turn! The hottest trends entail wearing bright oranges, honeysuckle pinks, light corals, lemon yellows, bright cobalts, vibrant aquas, and bright fuchsias. Honeysuckle pink, which is very bright and has reddish undertones, was named color of the year by Pantone. The biggest challenge is finding the right away to wear these colors. Honeysuckle pink looks great with black and navy. Orange looks good with khaki and white. Most brights can be paired with neutral colors such as camel or khaki. The trick is to pick colors that compliment your skin tone, eye color or hair. The right color will look more flattering than black would. Remember to mix contrasting colors that look well together or use a vibrant bag, shoes, belt or accessories to rev up an otherwise neutral outfit. Everyone looks better in brights if you follow the guidelines!
Little White Dress
The little white dress has replaced the little black dress this season. What about not wearing white until after Memorial Day Weekend? Ah, that rule is already out of fashion! Brighten your spring wardrobe with pieces of white or wear it as an entire outfit. This color has dominated the runway this spring. Celebrities have been quick to adopt the trend. Wear white skirts, pants, tops, jackets, trench coats and dresses. Long white dresses are no longer for just brides. Fashionable ladies have been spotted wearing maxi white dresses. In addition, brides to be are wearing a little white number for their bridal showers, rehearsal dinners and are taking one or two with them in their honeymoon.

Spring Trends
Black & White
Timeless black and white is key for the season. This ever-chic color combo is a classic for a reason: it’s very flattering.
Nude hues
Nothing is more sophisticated than head to toe neutrals! The extra detailing on the nude colors has been a big hit.
Bright colors
Spring so far has been a spectacle of bold bright colors. Everyone seems to look better in brights.
White hot
The crisp clean look is so in! A white piece is used as a blank canvas to showcase any color you please
Gold & Sheer
Gold sequence or accents are the new it. Add intrigue to your look with some sheer layers.
Fashion & Beauty Icon: Elizabeth Taylor
Today, March 23rd, 2011, the world lost a symbol of beauty, elegance and grace. Elizabeth Taylor is a Hollywood legend and Academy Award winner. She became famous at the age of 12 in her first movie National Velvet. In the 1960’s she was one of the highest paid actresses, earning $1 million for Cleopatra. Given her lack of professional training, the range of her acting was surprisingly wide.
Taylor was the epitome of Hollywood glamour. The brunette beauty with her violet eyes, raven locks and wasp waist, captured the hearts of many men. She was always adapting to the trends of the period embracing a feminine and sweet style.
The actress launched her scent White Diamonds in 1991, which is still the best-selling celebrity fragrance in the world. She dreamed of designing perfume 25 years before she actually did. When a dear friend passed away of aids, Taylor brought enormous awareness to HIV and AIDS starting in the 1980’s and helped found the American Foundation of AIDS Research.
Elizabeth Taylor was with no doubt the biggest icon of her era. She will be remembered not only for her unconditional support as an activist to HIV/AIDS, but always for her love of fashion and passion for acting.
